Permanent vs Seasonal Christmas Lights

Seasonal installs cost less each year; permanent systems cost more once and work for every holiday. How to decide for your home.

Both put lights on your roofline. The difference is whether they come down in January. That one choice changes the cost, the look, and how often you use them.

Seasonal installation suits you if…

  • You love the look of big classic C9 bulbs or a wrapped tree.
  • You only light up for Christmas.
  • You're renting, or may move in the next few years.
  • You have a single-story home where installation is quick.

Permanent lighting suits you if…

  • You have a two-story or large home and want to stop paying for ladder work every year.
  • You'd use the lights for more than one holiday, or as everyday accent lighting.
  • You plan to stay several years, so the up-front cost spreads out.
  • Your HOA allows permanent exterior fixtures.

A rough break-even

Divide the permanent quote by what a seasonal install costs you each year. If a permanent system is quoted at $4,000 and your seasonal install runs $800 a year, it takes about five seasons to come out even on Christmas alone, sooner if you'd use it for other holidays. Run it with your own quotes; national averages vary too much to decide on.

Many homes do both

Permanent lights only cover the roofline. A common setup is a permanent roofline for year-round use, plus seasonal tree wraps and a lit entry each December.
