Professional installers have a short season and a fixed number of crews, so the calendar is the real constraint. The earlier you ask, the more choice you get on install date, design and, sometimes, price.

The short answer: ask in September or October

Many installers start booking in late summer, and returning customers and commercial clients often take the first dates. If you want lights on by the Thanksgiving weekend, request a quote in September or October. A November request can still work, but expect fewer install dates to choose from.

A typical Bay Area season

General pattern. Each installer sets its own schedule.
WhenWhat usually happens
August–SeptemberInstallers open bookings; returning customers rebook
OctoberDesigns and quotes; commercial installs begin
Early–mid NovemberMost residential installs; lights tested, timers set
Thanksgiving weekendThe traditional lights-on date for many homes
DecemberService calls for any dark sections; late installs if dates remain
JanuaryTakedown and storage

Installing in early November doesn't mean the lights have to be on. Most installs include a timer, so they can stay off until whatever date you choose.

No snow, but rain matters

Walnut Creek doesn't get snow, which makes installation easier than in colder places, but wet roofs and wind can push dates back. Booking early leaves room for a weather delay without missing the date you care about.

Left it late?

  • Call rather than email. It's the fastest way to find out whether a date is still open.
  • Keep the design simple. A roofline-only install fits into a full schedule more easily than a large custom design.
  • Be flexible on the date. A weekday install is often easier to fit in than a weekend.
  • Plan next year now. If this season is full, ask to be put on the list for next year, or look at permanent lights, which can be installed outside the rush.

When do lights come down?

Usually in January. If you want them up for longer, or you have an HOA or landlord deadline, agree the takedown date in writing when you book.
